Steps to Take In A Pet Emergency
If you are going through a veterinary emergency, take the following steps.
- Call Ahead If Possible - During our usual walk-in hours contact us as soon as you can. For after-hours care, call the emergency pet hospital displayed above to inform them that you are on your way.
- Follow Instructions Provided - When you call the emergency animal hospital to let them know you are on your way, they may provide you with instructions to help you apply first aid or otherwise make your pet as comfortable as possible. Carefully follow these instructions.
- Remain Calm - Be calm and be extra careful around your cat or dog. In many situations when animals are in pain they react negatively towards anyone trying to help them and could scratch or bite.

- Do I need to call ahead?
Kittrell Animal Hospital provides emergency and urgent veterinary care for cats and dogs during our regular walk-in clinic hours. We will always recommend calling us in advance if you are able, but we understand that in emergency situations it isn't always possible to do so.
If we are unable to see your cat or dog, we suggest visiting the after-hours emergency vet location displayed above.
- When is your clinic open?
Our veterinarians are able to see emergency cases during our normal walk-in hours:

- What situations require emergency veterinary care?
Below are examples of emergency situations that require immediate care:
- Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
- Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine
- Choking, difficulty breathing, or continuous coughing/gagging
- Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop
- Fractured bones or severe lameness
- Seizures and/or staggering
- Inability to urinate or pass feces, or pain associated with urinating or passing feces
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea; 2+ episodes in 24-hours
- Injuries to the eye(s)
- Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)
- Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
- Heat stress or heatstroke
- Unconsciousness
- How long will we have to wait to see the vet?

We are unable to predict the cases we will see and when they will arrive. If you can, call us in advance to find out whether we are able to provide emergency care for your cat or dog.

- What happens if my pet needs to stay in the hospital?
Sometimes veterinary emergencies require intensive overnight care. At Kittrell Animal Hospital we are able to provide overnight care for animals that require it.
While in our care, our dedicated team will treat your pet as if they were our own.
